PITON DE LA FOURNAISE AND ST DENIS
Reunion has it all: mountains, waterfalls, culture and beaches. Being a French island, it also comes with a healthy Euro price tag. That aside, it's still a place I recommend wholeheartedly for active travellers. Where else can you do a volcano three ways: traipsing through underground lava tubes, climbing its crumbly sides and soaring above in helicopter? One of 3 small village in the Cirque of Mafate, this area is only accessible by helicopter and on foot. Practically, this means while you're hiking down into the deep valley formed by collapsed volcano, Piton de Neiges, you're often passed by local residents carrying grocery bags. The 2 day hike takes you down to La Nouvelle where you stay in an overnight gîtes (bed and breakfast/homestay).
